Soc 26-Types of skill, practice, guidance & feedback Flashcards
What are the 6 skills?
Open skills
Closed skills
Basic/simple skills
Complex skills
High organisation skills
Low organisation skills
What is an open skill?
The environment and things around you are always changing. Involves decision making, externally paced.
An example of this is dribbling past a defender in football
What is a closed skill?
Stable environment (doesnt change) - self paced. An example of this is a penalty in football.
What is a basic/simple skill?
Easy skill once learnt. Requires low concentration. Little information to process (no decision to make). An example of this would be a side-foot pass in football.
What is a complex skill?
Hard, high concentration. Lots of information to process. Decisions need to be made quickly. An example of this would be a smash in tennis.
What is a high organisation skill?
Complicated (to teach and coach). Requires large amounts of attention and coordination. (Hard to break into phases). An example of this would be a summersault in trampolining)
What is a low organisation skill?
Uncomplicated and simple. Can usually break the skill down into phases. An example of this would be a set shot in basketball.
What are the 4 types of practice?
Massed
Distributed
Fixed
Variable
What is massed practice?
Practice until learnt (can be intense and mentally challenging). Normally for athletes who are fit and motivated.
What is distributed practice?
Practised over several sessions. Plenty of rest breaks. Normally for players of lower ability, experience or fitness levels
What is fixed practice?
Practiced in a simple situation, over and over again until perfected. An example would be practicing a set shot in basketsball
What is variable practice?
Practicing the skill in a variety of different situations. Essential for open skills. Adapt to different situations (this could be weather conditions/opponents e.t.c)
What is guidance?
Information to aid the learning of a skill; can be given VISUALLY, VERBALLY, MANUALLY or MECHANICALLY
What is visual guidance?
Coach showing the technique or ‘perfect model’. Easy to understand. Effective in the early stages of learning.
What is verbal guidance?
Can be difficult to understand, but important for harder skills. More for advanced performers
What is manual guidance?
Using physical contact to help a performer complete a skill. Helps to give the ‘feel’ for movement, for people struggling/low ability
What is mechanical guidance?
Using equipment to help a performer complete a skill. Effective in the early stages. Get a ‘feel’ for the movement.
What is feedback?
Information we receive before, during or after a performance, about the performance.
What is intrinsic feedback?
Intrinsic - comes from the performer themselves (Experienced performer will know when something feels right or wrong)
What is extrinsic feedback?
Extrinsic - comes from an external source such as a teacher or coach, helps beginners who might not have the knowledge to access their own performance.
What is concurrent feedback?
Concurrent - Provided during the performance. This feedback Can be acted on immediately (eg communication from the sidelines, from the manager or coach
What is terminal feedback?
Terminal - provided at the and of the game or performance feedback will be aimed at being more reflective and giving an overview of the performance
