Soc 17. The Structure Of The Respiratory System Flashcards

1
Q

How do the cardiovascular system and respiratory system work together?

A

An efficient cardiovascular system allows the respiratory system to work well. The respiratory system supplies the oxygen and the cardiovascular system gets it to the muscles.

Q

How inhaling works.

A

When we inhale, the intercostal muscles contract and lift the chest upwards and outwards, and the diaphragm tightens and lowers. The diaphragm changes from a dome shape to a flatter shape when we inhale.

Q

How exhaling works.

A

When we exhale the diaphragm exhales making it move upwards back to a dome shape.

Q

Why do our lungs change shape?

A

Our lungs do this so that we can create a vacuum to suck in as much as oxygen possible to supply us with enough oxygen.

Q

What is gaseous exchange?

A

This is when the oxygen flows through the alveoli and then the haemoglobin picks up the oxygen sucking it into the red blood cell.

Q

What is oxygen debt?

A

The amount of oxygen needed at the end of exercise to break down the lactic acid is known as oxygen debt.

Q

How do we repay oxygen debt?

A

We repay oxygen debt through deep breathing after the activity to supply more oxygen.

Q

How does exercise impact the respiratory system?

A

As we exercise our heart beat fluctuates as we work to send more blood around our body (vascular shunting) as we need to get rid of CO2 and get O2 around to the muscles etc.

Q

How much O2 and CO2 do we breathe in and out?

A

Inhale : O2 = 20% C02 = 0.4%

Exhale: 02 = 16% C02 = 4%

Q

What is vital capacity?

A

It’s the greatest amount of air that can be passed in and out of the lungs by the most forceful inhale and exhale.

Q

What is the diaphragm?

A

The primary muscle used in the process of inspiration, or inhalation. A domed-shaped sheet of muscle that separates the chest from the rest of the body cavity.

16
Q

What are the bronchioles?

A

The smaller branches coming off the bronchi.

17
Q

What are the alveoli?

A

Tiny sacs at the end of the bronchioles, where gas exchange takes place.

18
Q

What is haemoglobin?

A

A type of protein found in every red blood cell.

19
Q

What is anaerobic exercise?

A

Working at a high intensity level without oxygen for energy production.

20
Q

What is your VO2 max?

A

The volume of oxygen an athlete can consume while exercising at max capacity.
