What is a concussion?

A

An injury normally caused by a blow to the head and can happen in many sports. SYMPTOMS: headaches, weakness, loss of coordination/balance, confusion or slurred speech.

What are fractures:

A

A broken/cracked bone - there are several types of fractures: in closed (skin is not damaged over the break), compound fracture (broken bone protrudes through skin), simple fracture (take place in one line with no displacement), and stress factures (happen due to fatigue).

What are dislocations:

A

When a bone at a joint is forced out of it’s normal position, often occurs due to a hard blow which causes a displacement of a bone. SYMPTOMS: deformity and swelling of the joint, which is locked out of position.

What is a torn cartilage?

A

Cartilage is the firm elastic substance which lines adjoining bones. Normally damage done to it is a result of wear and tear from long-term overuse.

What are sprains?

A

A damaged ligament - one of the most common sprains in sport is a twisted ankle. They often occur when stretching too far past the normal joint range - also caused by falling or colliding with an opponent. SYMPTOMS: swelling.

What is a soft tissue injury?

A

Soft tissue is in the joints where two or more bones meet, they are particularly prone to injury because movement past the range can tear or pull it.

What are strains?

A

A strain is a twist, pull or tear of a muscle or a tendon. Most common strains are in the back of the hamstrings. Two examples of strains are golfers elbows and tennis elbows.

What are abrasions?

A

Abrasions/grazes can be caused by friction of the skin against a rough surface = concrete playground or artificial pitches. Can occur from tackles or just simply falling over in a match of football, rugby, hockey etc.
