Soc 16. Structre Of The Blood Vessels Flashcards
What is vascular shunting?
Process that increases blood flow to activate areas during exercise by diverting blood away from inactive areas; achieved by vasodilation and vasoconstriction.
What is the immune system?
The structures and processes in your body that stop disease.
What is thrombokinase?
Substance involved in blood clotting in plasma.
What is serotonin?
It’s the hormone that triggers the clotting process.
What is plasma?
The fluid part of blood.
What is erythrocyte?
Another name for red blood cell.
What is haemoglobin?
A red protein in the blood that transports oxygen.
What is anaemia?
A condition where there is a lack of red cells or haemoglobin in the blood
What is a leukocyte?
A leukocyte is a white blood cell.
What is a pathogen?
A pathogen is an agent that causes diseases, such as a virus.
What is an Antibody?
This is a chemical that destroys a pathogen.
What is the cardio-respiratory system?
The interaction of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the muscles during exercise.
What is Cardiovascular?
It is to do with the heart, blood, and blood vessels all together in a system
What is vasodilation?
This is when veins swell up/dilate; causing a widening of the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessels to allow increased blood flow.
What is Vasoconstriction?
When veins shrink down; narrowing of the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessels to decrease blood flow.
