Soc 17: The Structure Of The Respiratory System Flashcards
What does the Respiratory system include?
Nose,Mouth,Throat,Voice Box,windpipe,lungs and blood vessels
Why do we need our respiratory system?
- To get oxygen into the body
- To remove carbon dioxide from the body
- In sport or physical activity, the respiratory and cardiovascular system must work closely together to keep the body supplied with oxygen.
What is the amount of exhaled and inhaled air?
Inspiration: Breathing in
20% oxygen + 0.4% Carbon Dioxide
Exhalation: Breathing out
16% oxygen + 4% Carbon Dioxide
What happens to our breathing when we begin to excercise?
Depth of Breathness and breathing gets quicker
Oxygen Debt
The amount of oxygen needed at the end of a physical activity to break down any lactic acid.
Anaerobic excerice:
working at a high intensity level without oxygen for energy production.
Vo2 Max:
the volume of oxygen an athlete can consume while exercising at maximum capacity.
Respiration
the movement of air from outside the body into the cells within tissues.
Diaphragm
the primary muscle used in the process of inspiration, or inhalation. A dome-shaped sheet of muscle that separates the chest from the rest of the body cavity.
Tranchea
the tube that takes air into the chest, also known as the windpipe.
Bronchus (pl. bronchi)
tube along which air passes from the trachea into the lungs.
Bronchioles
smaller branches coming off the bronchi.
Alveoli
tiny sacs at the end of the bronchioles, where gas exchange takes place.
Haemoglobin
a type of protein found in every red blood cell.
Gaseous Exchange
the delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream and the removal of carbon dioxide from the tissues.
