Soc 10:Types Of Injuries And Injury Preventions Flashcards
Soft tissue injury (joint injuries)
Joints are where to or more bones meet. They are particulaly prone injury because movement outside of their normal range
How can a soft tissue injury occur?
When a joint is taken beyond its normal range.
Sprain
A sprain is damage to a ligament.
How can a sprain occur?
Sprains often occur when stretching too far past the normal range of a joint but also be caused by falling or collinding with an opponet.
Strain
A strain is a twist, tear or overstretch muscle or a tendon. Most common strains are in the back or hamstrings.
How can a strain occur?
It can occur due to tendons are inflamed due to overuse.
Torn Cartilage
Cartilage is a firm elastic substance which lines adjoining bones. It absorbs the impact of the bones while reducing the friction during sports activity.
How does a torn cartilage occur?
Damage to carilage often occurs due to wear and tear from long term overuse.
Fractures
A fracture is a broken or a cracked bone.
How do fractures occur?
Happens through contact or overuse
Dislocates
A dislocation is why a bone at a joint is forced out its normal position.
How do dislocations occur?
Often occurs as a result of a hard blow which causes one of the bones to be displaced.
Abrasions
Abrasions or grases can be caused by friction of the skin against a rough surface e.g concrete playground or artificial pitches
How can abrasions occur?
Can occur from a tackle or just simply falling over during a game of football, rugby or hockey.
Concussion
An impact to the head causes unconsciosness comparison or memory loss
How can a concussion occur?
Normally caused by blow to the head and happens in many sports.
Using the correct principle of training
Avoid overuse injuries
Playing to the rules and competion
Rules help to ensure player saftey
Protective equipment/Clothing
It also important to not wear clothing that might injure an opponent
Checking equipment and Facilities
Organisers should check that the facilities are safe and secure
Warming up/Cooldown
Warm up: Perform a light aerobic activity to increase blood flow to working muscles and stretch those muscles to avoid injury.
Cooldown:Gradually reduce the level of activity to help with the dispersal of lactic acid and avoid muscle stiffness.
What does the R stand for in RICE
Rest the injured area for 48 hours
What does the I stand for in RICE
Ice for 20 minutes at a time, 4 to 8 times per day
What does the C stand for in RICE
Compress to help reduce swelling
What does the E stand for in RICE
Elevate the injured limb 6 to 10 inches above the heart
