Soc 17-The Structure Of The Respiratory System Flashcards
What makes up the respiratory system
Lungs,Nose,Mouth,Voice box,throat,windpipe,lungs and vessels
Why do we need our respiratory system
To get oxygen into the body
To remove carbon dioxide from the body
In sport/physical activity, the respiratory system and cardiovascular system work closely together to supply the body with oxygen
When inspiring (breathing in) what is the percentage of oxygen and carbon dioxide
20% oxygen 0.4% Carbon dioxide
When exhaling what percentage of oxygen compared to carbon dioxide is present
16% oxygen 4%Carbon Dioxide
What is Vital capacity
The greatest amount of air that can be passed into and out of the lungs by the most forceful inspiration and expiration
What is tidal volume
The amount of air inspired and expired with each breath
What is oxygen debt
The amount of oxygen needed at the end of a physical activity to break down any lactic acid
What is your VO2 max
The volume of oxygen an athlete can consume whilst exercising at maximum capacity
What is the trachea’s function
The trachea is rings of cartilege that help a person to breath by being a pipe between the nose/mouth and lungs
What does the bronchi do
It seperates the air into either the left or right channel/lung
What are bronchioles
They are sub branches that lead to the alveoli
What are the alveolus
They are air sacs and the ultimate location for the air that passes from the mouth/nose,One cells thick,They are the site of gaseous exchange
What is the diaphragm and it’s function
It contracts to cause inhalation by flattening and relaxes to cause exhalation by pushing the lungs back upwards to force the carbon dioxide and air out
What are the intercostal muscles and what do they do
The intercostal muscles contract and lift the chest upwards when inhaling and outwards when exhaling
Why is there a difference in the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in inhaled and exhaled air whilst somebody is training
The runner will inhale in order to get oxygen to the working muscles in order to get rid of oxygen debt and also to provide energy to these working muscles.
