Soc 20-Lever Systems Flashcards
What is a lever
In your body the term lever refers to a system of muscles and bones working together to bring about movement
What are the three different lever systems
First class,Second Class,Third class
What is a fulcrum
The pivot around which the lever rotates (joints)
What is a load
The force that is applied by the lever system, the load is the object you want to move
What is an effort
A force that is applied by the user of the lever system, the effort is supplied by your muscles
What is a lever arm
A rigid bar such as a bone
What is the meaning of the Acronym FLE
First class lever-Fulcrum in the middle
Second class lever-Load is in the middle
Third Class lever-Effort is in the middle
Fulcrum,Load,Effort
What is a first class lever
One where a fulcrum sits in the middle between the load and effort
What class lever is a tricep dip classified as and why
Its a first class lever as the fulcrum (elbow) sits between the load (weight in the hand) and the effort applied by the tricep
What is an example of a first class lever system
The neck muscles, joint between the cranium and vertabrae and cranium work together in a first class lever
What is an example of a second class lever movement and how is it one
A calf raise as the body weight (load) sits between the effort (gastrocnemius) and fulcrum (toes and balls of the feet)
What is a second class lever
A lever in which the load sits between the fulcrum and effort
What is a third class lever
In a 3rd class lever system, the effort is applied between the fulcrum and the load
What is an example of a 3rd class lever system
A bicep curl Because the effort is applied between the fulcrum and the load. The effort is applied by the bicep which is between your elbow joint and the weight in your hands
Why does a mechanical advantage happen
A mechanical advantage happens because the resistance arm is shorter than the effort arm
