Soc 10-Preventing Injuries Flashcards
What are the two ways an injury can be caused
Internal causes,External Causes
What are internal causes
Injuries caused by the individual-Overuse injuries,Sudden injuries
What are external causes
Injuries caused by something not to do with your own body-Foul play,Impact with equipment, playing surface, inappropriate clothing, faulty equipment and if it’s very hot or cold
What are the 8 different types of injuries
Soft Tissue Injury
Sprains
Concussions
Fractures
Abrasions
Dislocations
Strain
Torn Cartilage
What is a soft tissue injury
Joints are where two or more bones meet They are a common injury as movement outside of the normal range can tear or overstretch tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints
What are Sprains
Sprain=Ligaments only.A sprain is a damaged ligament they often occur when stretched too far past the normal range of a joint but can also be caused by falling over or colliding with an opponent.Symptoms=Swelling.
What are strains
A strain is a twist tear or overstretched muscle or tendon
What is a fracture
A broken or cracked bone
What are the 4 types of fractures
Stress,Compound,In-Closed,Simple Fracture
What is a stress fracture
It’s an overuse injury that can happen as a result of fatigue
What is a compound fracture
A compound fracture is when the broken bone protudes through the skin
What is an in closed fracture
The skin over the break isn’t damaged
What is a simple fracture
The fracture takes place with no displacement on the bone
What is a greenstick fracture
Break only part way across the bone
What is a transverse fracture
A break straight across the bone
What is an impacted fracture
Where peices of the bone lock into each other
What is a communited fracture
When a bone is broken into more than two peices
What is an oblique fracture
A break at an angle
What are abrasions
An abrasion is a superficial rub or wearing off of the skin usually caused by a scrape against a rough surface.
What does RICE Stand for
Rest,Rest for at least 48 Hours
Ice,Ice area for 20 minutes at a time,4-8 times a day
Compress,To help reduce swelling
Elevate,The injured limb 6-10 inches above the heart
What are 5 Injury preventions
Correct application of the principles of training
Correct application and adherence to the rules
Use of appropriate protective clothing
Checking of equipment and facilities
Use of a warm up and cooldown
What principles of training are directly related to preventing injury
FITT,Progressive overload,Specificity
What are the 5 types of injuries to the bone
Greenstick,Transverse,Impacted,Oblique,Comminuted
What is a torn cartialidge
Cartialige lines adjoining bones damage to these is usually caused by wear and tear/overuse
What are joints
Where two or more bones meet
What are ligaments
A conective tissue that joins two bones together
What are tendons
Where muscle and bone meet
What is a ball and socket joint
Where one bone is rounded and moves within the depression of the other bone allowing movement
