Soc 14-The Muscular System Flashcards
What is the function of the deltoid
Raises the arm in all directions at the shoulder
What is an example of when you would use the deltoid in a sport
When serving in tennis and raising your arm above your head
What does the pectoralis major do
Adduct the arm at the shoulder
What is the antagonistic muscle to the deltoids
The pectoralis major
What is an example of when you would use the pectoralis major in sport
Peforming a jab in boxing
Where is the latissimus dorsi
At the back of the body, either side of the chest
What is an example of when you would use your lattimus dorsi
Pulling an ore in rowing
What is the latissimus dorsi function
To pull your arms down at the shoulders and behind your back
What is the biceps function
Flex the arm at the elbows
When would you use your biceps in sport
When peforming an uppercut in boxing
Where are the triceps located
At the top of each arm at the back
What is the antagonistic pair to the bicep
Tricep
What is the triceps function
Allows you to Extend the arm at the elbow
When would you use your tricep in sport
Taking a throw in in football
Where are the external obliques
To the side of the abdomen
What is the external obliques function
To pull the chest downwards flex and rotate spinal column
When would you use your external obliques in sport
Dodging in boxing
Where is the gluteus maximus
At the top of the leg at the back
What does the gluteus maximus do
Adduct and extend the leg at the hips pull the leg backwards
What is an example of using the gluteus maximus in sports
Pulling your leg back to hit the ball
Where are the hip flexors
They sit deep in the fromt of the hip and connect the leg
What does the hip flexor do
Flex the hip, help the leg and knee up towards the body
What is an example of using the hip flexors in sport
Sprinting the ball in basketball
What are voluntary muscles
Muscles that are under our control and you can choose whether to contract or relax them. These allow us to move in whatever way we want through antagonistic pairs
What are involuntary muscles
Muscles not under our control such as muscles in the digestive system. These help us in sport as the blood vessels distribute blood to areas it is most needed and the digestive system digests the food we eat and turn it into energy.
What are cardiac muscles
They are a specialised type of involuntary muscle that are made up of interlinked fibers which send electrical signals down to any muscles you need to contract together for allow for movement
What activites do slow twitch muscle fibers (type 1) specialise in
They suit endurance activities and contain myoglobin which transports oxygen to the working muscles
What do type 11a fast twitch fibers specialise in
They are used in anarobic work which can be improved through endurance training and increase their resistance to fatigue
What type of race would use type 11a fibers
400m runners
What do type 11x fast twitch muscle fibers do
They are used in anarobic work that can generate more power than other muscle fibers but fatigue quickly
When would you use type 11x fast twitch muscle fibers in a cross country race
At the end to sprint past people and to overtake people during the race
Where are the quadriceps located
At the top of each leg at the front
What do the quadriceps do
They extend the leg at the knee
What is an example of using the quadriceps in sport
Kicking somebody in kickboxing when extending the knee
What is the hamstrings function
To flex the legs at the knee
What is an example of using the hamstrings in sport
Pulling the leg back to hit the ball powerfully
Where is the gastrocnemius
At the bottom of each leg at the back
What is the function of the gastrocnemius
Point the toes (planta flexion) at the ankle
What is an example of somebody using their gastrocnemius in sport
Standing on your toes in ballet
Where is the tibialis anterior
It runs down the shin
What is the function of the tibialis
To pull the toes up towards the shin (dorsi flexion)
What is an example of using the tibialis in sport
Bringing your toes up to control the football
