Soc 16 The Structure Of The Blood Vessels/Heart Flashcards
What are the 3 components of blood vessels?
•Arteries
•Veins
•Capillaries
List the 4 characteristics of Arteries
•Takes blood AWAY from the heart
•Arteries have thick walls, very elastic due to the high pressure
•Lumen is the channel the blood flows through, which widens when exercising
•The pulmonary artery is different as it carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs from the heart.
List the 4 characterisitics of Veins
•Veins carry blood into the heart
•Veins have thinner walls, less elastic due to lower blood pressure
•Veins contain many valves which prevent backflow of deoxygenated blood
•The pulmonary vein is different as it carries deoxygenated bloodmfeom the lungs back to the heart.
List the 4 characteristics of Capillaries
•Capillaries are microscopic - one cell thick
•Capillaries collect deoxygenated blood which transfers oxygen and nutrients to the muscles
•Capillaries then collect any waste product and dispose them around the body.
•Capillaries are where gaseous exchange takes place.
Defenition of immune system?
The structures and processes in your body that stop disease.
Definition of thrombokinase?
Substance involved in blood clotting.
Definition of Serotonin?
Hormones that triggers the clotting process.
Definition of plasma?
The fluid part of the blood
Definition of Erythrocyte?
Red blood cells
Definition of haemoglobin?
A red protein in the blood that transports oxygen.
Definition of Anaemia?
a condition where there is a lack of red cells or haemoglobin in the blood.
Definition of Leukocyte?
White blood cell
Definition of a pathogen?
an agent that causes disease, such as a virus.
Definition of antibody?
Chemical that destroys a pathogen
