Soc 16 - The Structure Of The Blood Vessels And Blood Distribution Flashcards
How does the heart beat
A ‘lub dub’ rhythm
First phase of blood pumping
Systolic phase
This is where blood is pumped from both atria into the ventricles (lub)
Then both ventris contract (dub)
Pushing deoxygenated blood to leave the right ventricle and out through the pulonary veins to the lungs.
Ixygenated blood in the left leaves by the aorta to the body
Second phase
Diastolic phase
This is when the heart is relaxing and refilling with the atria with blood.
Importance of red blood cells
Transport oxygen from the lungs to the body, contain haemoglobin is what stores the oxygen in the red blood cells, this is important for a long distance runner as their working muscles.
Importance of white blood cells
Protect you from infection and deseases, if athletes have desease of infection they cannot perform
Importance of platelets
Formed in the bone marrow, tiny fragments that clump together to help clot the blood and stop bleeding.
Importance of plasma
Main role is to take nutrients hormones and proteins to the body parts that need it most. Cells also put there waste products into plasma.
Immune system
The structures and processes in your body that stop disease
Thrombokonase
Substance involved in blood clotting
Serotonin
Hormone that triggers the clotting process
Plasma
The fluid part of blood
Erythrocyte
Red blood cell
Haemoglobin
A red protein in the blood that transports oxygen
Anaemia
A condition where there is a lack of red blood cells or haemoglobin in the blood cells
Leukocyte
White blood cell
