Skull Flashcards
How many bones are there in the skull?
22
Why are sutures important
sutures are fibrous joints that connect the bones
How is the mandible an exception?
However, the mandible articulates with the skull at the temporomandibular joint and the first cervical vertebra articulates with the skull at the atlanto-occipital joint. Both of these are synovial joints, the former being a joint of the head while the latter is regarded as a joint of the neck.
How many paired bones?
the maxillae, the inferior nasal conchae, as well as the zygomatic, palatine, nasal, and lacrimal bones.
How many unpaired?
mandible, ethmoid, and vomer, frontal, sphenoid, occipital
How is the shape of the skull formed?
he cranium is made up of flat bones. However, the bones of the facial skeleton are irregular in shape.
How do you distinguish a male skull from female skull
Male = ridges of the brows & larger mastoid
Female are smoother frontal bone & smaller mastoid
Why is the lambda landmark important?
Junction with sagittal suture with lamboidal suture & demarcates with membr. ossification
What is wormian bones
additional small bones sometimes found between the cranial sutures of the bones of the skull vault, most commonly in relation to the lambdoid suture.
What is the name of the sheath in the skull
Tentorium cerebelli
What does ventral mean
Towards belly
What does dorsal mean
Towards back
What does rostal mean
Towards the front of brain
What does caudal mean
Towards tail
