Limbic System Wk3 Flashcards
Why is the limbic system important?
Emotions, learning and memory, evoked by olfactory/emotional responses
Emotins have 3 components:
1) Visceral sensory component caused by endocrine & autonomic stimuli
2) Motor component involving facialmuscles
3) Cognitive - evaluative component to assess situation
What are the components of limbic system?
cingulate gyrus/cortex, parahippocampal gyrus, amygdala, hippocampus, fornix, hypothalamus, thalamus, prefrontal cortex
Amydala is the
emotions & overt behavioural expression - implicated in mood disorder including drepression, anxiety, sub. abuse
Medical disruptions to Amydala can lead to
Kluver Bucy Syndrome - bilateral temporal love lesions
Symptoms of Kluver Bucy Syndrome include
visual agnosia (cannot see); hyperorality - (taste); hypermetamorphosis - intesively overrreact to visual; placidity - do not show fear/anger; hyperphagia - excessive eating; hypersexuality - sexual contact
Hippocampus is
learning and memory
Hippocampus is localised to
medial temporal lobe
Damage to hippocampal formation can result into
amnesia and can implicate in schizophrenia (with prefrontal cortex)
Alzheimer’s disease
Severe atrophy of the
hippocampal formation
