Meninges Wk2 Flashcards
Meningitis is the
Inflammation of the meninges that causes swelling and pressure on brain
Name the three meningeal coverings of the brain
Dura mater (outer), Arachnoid mater and Pia mater (inner)
Describe how the dura mater covers the brain
- cranial meninges
Cranial meninges are continuous w spinal meninges @ foramen magnum
Dura consists of two layers: in places layers split to form venous sinuses
Identify the major dural sheets & their blood supply
Major dural sheets:
- Falx cerebri
- Falx cerebelli
-Tentorium cerebelli
-Diaphragm sellae
Tentorium cerebelli is the
tent layer (ground layer of dura)
Falx cerebri is located
division along the longitudinal fissure
Is dura vascular? Is it perfused by any arteries?
Highly vascular
and Dura is perfused by middle meningeal artery which
leaves grooves in skull
Dura has sensory
Innervation - pain sensations
Epidural/ Extradural space
Epidural/ Extradural space
Potential space b/w calvaria and dura
Site of extradural haemorrahage
Subdural space
Potential space between
innermost layer of dura
mater and arachnoid mater
Site of subdural haemorrahage
Describe how the arachnoid mater
covers the brain
Largely non-vascular
* arachnoid granulations bulge into venous sinuses: maintain CSF volume
- CSF is present in subarachnoid space
Pia is the shiny layer
True
Rev from arachnoid cisterns
- Cisterna magna - largest
- Interpeduncular cistern
- Quadrigeminal cistern
- Pontine cistern
Describe how the pia mater covers the brain
- highly vascular
- adheres closely to brain surface (highly vascular)
- connected to arachnoid via trabeculae
