cranial 10, 11, 12 Flashcards
What is this cranial nerve called
Vagus nerve
What type of fibres does the vagus nerve carry
GSA, GVA, SSA, GVE, GSE fibres (90% sensory; 10% motor)
Where does the vagus nerve pass
jugular foramen
Vagus is the largest
Largest cranial parasympathetic outflow
It will innervate muscles of
Pharynx (stylopharyngeus - excp), soft palate (exc. tensor veli palatini = trigeminal branch 3)
Vagus innervates pharnyx, soft palate, larynx with 2 exceptions
Visceral receptors include
aortic arch (modulation of BP); mucous membranes of pharynx, larynx, osephagus, lungs, heat, abdominal
nucleus (solitary)
General sensory afferents
skin post ear, ext. aud. meatus, dura - post cran fossa (spinal nucleus of trigmeninal)
SSA = taste = epiglottis
nucleus - solitary
Lesion can cause
Soft palate deviation, vocal chords paralysis
What is the 11th cranial nerve
Accessory
What is its role (accessory)?
To innervate the muscles (somatic efferent) = sternocleidomastoid and trapzius
Accessory will exit through the skull through the
Jugular foramen (exit cranial fossa)
Access. nerve originates from
Roots of cervial spinal roots originate from C1-C5
Lesion will cause
paralysis of SCM and trapezius
Hypoglossal is a
motor nerve and innervates tongue muscles
