Pelvis Wk11 Flashcards
Describe the bones that make up the pelvis.
Ilium, ischium, pubis, sacrum, coccyx
Role of pelvis
Support, protection & locomotion
Why is the arcuate line important?
False and true pelvis are divided by the arcuate line of pelvis
What are the contents of the false pelvis?
False Pelvis: ileum, caecum, appendix, sigmoid colon
What are the contents of the true pelvis?
True Pelvis: ureters (distal) urinary bladder, rectum,
reproductive organs
What is the marking for true pelvis?
Pelvic brim (pelvic inlet) (circle in the middle)
What are the ligaments and joints of the pelvis?
Lumbo-sacral joint
* Sacro-Iliac joints
Lig: iliolumbar and anterior sacroiliac ligaments
Sacroiliac ligament posterior
oblique
Sacrospinous ligament posterior
transverse
Sacraltuberous ligament is
inferior and almost vertical
Female Pelvis:
False pelvis – wide and shallow
Pelvic outlet – round
Ishial tuberosities – everted
Subpubic angle – 90-100 degree
What are the differences between female and male pelvis?
Shape- more broader & rounder (female) - Male = narrower
tuberosities - everted female/inverted in males
PO: F=round; M=oblong
SPA: F=90-100 and M=70
Male Pelvis
False pelvis – narrow and deep
Pelvic outlet – oblong
Ishial tuberosities – inverted
Subpubic angle – 70 degrees
What are the pelvic contents in urinary system?
Pelvic ureters
Urinary Bladder
Urethra
What are the pelvic content in GIT?
Sigmoid colon
Rectum
Anal canal
Pelvic Contents in the Reproductive System
Females include
Uterus
Uterine (Fallopian) tubes
Ovaries
Vagina
What are the pelvic contents in the male reproductives?
Prostate
Testis
Vas Deferens
Epididymis
Seminal glands
Ejaculatory ducts
Name and locate the muscles of pelvic diaphragm.
Separates pelvic cavity from the perineum
Formed by coccygeus and levator ani
Levator ani is composed of 3 muscles, which are?
Puborectalis (sling)
Pubococcygeus (sling)
Iliococcygeus
Female vs Male levator ani
- Males tight whereas females have connective tissue gaps for pregnancies
What is the function of pelvis?
Micturition, Defecation, Erection, Ejaculation & Parturition (females)
What are the nerve plexus of the pelvis?
Sacral plexus & Coccygeal Plexus
Coccygeal Plexus is located in
S4-S5 and nerve to leavator ani & ext anal sphincter
Sciatic nerve is from
S4-L3 and goes through greater sciatic foramen - posterior leg
