What is the purpose of glossopharyngeal nerves?
Different fibre types - sensory, visceral, somatic efferents
Where does the glossopharyngeal nerve pass
Jugular
Sensory info from General Visceral Afferents include
carotid body and sinuses; post 1/3 tongue; palatine, upper pharynx, mucosa, auditory tibe (pharyngotympanic)
For our anterior 2/3 tongue, it is carried by
facial nerve whereas the general sensation is carried by trigeminal. Glossopharyngeal is for posterior tongue
General Visceral efferents to the partoid salivary gland has its nucleus in
inferior salivatory nucleus (parotid salivary gland - causes us to produce saliva)
GSE to the
stylopharyngeus muscle (responsible for swallowing) and arises from CNS nucl. called Ambiguus
Lesion can cause
Loss of taste sensation and soft palate
