Female Reproductive Wk12 Flashcards
What are the peritoneal reflections in female UG?
Bladder, uterus, vagina, rectum
What is the lowest part of the periotneal contents?
recto-uterine space (6) - relationship of
vagina to lowest part of peritoneal cavity
What are the spaces/recesses in female UG?
Vesico-uterine pouch
Recto-uterine pouch or
Pouch of Douglas
What is the position of the uterus?
Normally Antiflexed and antiverted
Retroflexion & retroversion
Retroflexion
changed axis of uterus
Retroversion
changed axis of cervix
Retroverted and retroflexed
is when the uterus is backwards
What ligaments provide support to uterus?
Broad ligament (mesometrium) and round ligament of uterus (similar to spermatic cord in males)
What are the ligaments around cervix?
transverse cervical lig, uterosacral lig & pubocervical lig
What does the broad ligament do?
Broad ligament = two layers of peritoneum sandwiched
together on sides of uterus
What does the broad ligament comprise of?
Mesometrium; Mesosalpinx; Mesovarium
What are the ligaments in the uterus and broad ligament area?
uterine tube in upper free margin of broad lig.
- ovaries are posterior and have their own mesothelium
- round ligament runs through anterior part of broad lig.
- suspensory ligament of ovary contains ovarian vessels
Ecoptic pregnancies occur at several sites -
tubal, non-tubal, abdominal (recto-uterine pouch)
What is the blood supply of the female reproductive tract?
Internal iliac artery - focus on the anterior then posterior
Describe the branching of the internal iliac artery
Vaginal, uterine, and internal pudendal artery
What arteries have a connection/anastomosis
Uterine and ovarian arteries
Vaginal artery provides blood to?
Vaginal artery – vagina, bladder, rectum
Uterine artery provides blood to?
Uterine artery – major artery to uterus, but also ovary and
vagina. Enlarges significantly during pregnancy
Internal pudendal artery provides blood to?
Internal pudendal artery – perineum, erectile tissue
Ovarian artery
within suspensory ligament
Female external genitalia is composed of
labia majora
* labia minora
* vestibule or urogenital sinus = between labia minora
* clitoris
* urethal orifice
* vagina
Vagina has the roles for
fibromuscular tube - from vestibule to uterus
* for elimination of menstrual fluids
* receives penis during sexual intercourse, holds sperm
* forms birth canal for expulsion of fetus
* fornices (singular fornix)
What is the innervation of the female pelvis?
Superior hypogastric plexus
Inferior hypogastric plexus
Ovarian plexus
Pudenal nerve - has
motor and sensory components
