Sketchy: Trichomonas Flashcards
At what pH does Candida grow?
normal pH (under 4.5- acidic)
Clue cells on microscopy indicate ______.
Gardenerella
Pseudohyphae with budding yeast on wet mount microscopy indicate ______.
Candida
Cue:
- magician on a street corner pulling a strawberry out of his cervix-shaped hat
- sexual transmission
- causes vaginitis and cervicitis (“strawberry cervix”)
Cue:
- couple smooching in the street next to the metro

- burning
- itching

Cue:
- car going around the corner and splashing the magician
- moving car = motile trophozoites
- splashing water = wet mount for dx
What does Candida show under the microscope?
Pseudohyphae with budding yeast
What causes the “strawberry cervix?”
intense inflammation with capillary dilation and punctate hemorrhages
How is Trichomonas vaginalis diagnosed?
a wet mount showing MOTILE trophozoites
What does Gardenerella show under the microscope?
clue cells
What are the s/s of vaginitis?
- burning
- itching
- malodorous yellow-green discharge
At what pH does Gardenerella grow?
pH greater than 4.5 (basic)
Cue:
- funny shaped puddles on the street
- distinct trophozoite shape
- diagnose with wet mount
Cue:
- street artist selling red Georgia O’Keefe-like paintings for $4.50 and up
- red paintings = vaginitis
- $4.50 = pH higher than 4.5 in Trichomonas infection (basic)
Motile trophozoites on wet mount indicate _____.
Trichomonas vaginalis
How is Trichomonas vaginalis acquired?
it’s an STI
Cue:
- wet ground is shimmering yellow/green from traffic lights
yellow-green vaginal discharge
