chronic inflammation and destruction of intra- and extra- hepatic bile ducts leading to build up of bile in liver, causing cirrhosis

middle aged women

what are symptoms
A
itch without rash fatigue xanthelasma arthralgia oeteoporosis hepatosplenomegaly jaundice

how is it diagnosed
A
LFTs show cholestatic pattern
increased IgM
AMA+ve, ANA+ve
liver biopsy

how is it treated
A
urseodeocycholic acid azathioprine (immunosuppression) prednisolone (steroid) treat complications (osteoperosis) liver transplant

what are the complications
A
most will not develop symptoms
majority of people with PBC symptoms do not develop liver failure BUT still common cause for liver transplantation
