Gastric Cancer Flashcards
what are the benign tumours
polyps - rare
what are the malignant tumours
adenocarcinoma
gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTS)
Lymphomas (MALTomas)
what are characteristics of gastrointestinal stromal tumours
mesenchymal tumours affecting people aged 55-65
linked with defect of pacemaker cells (ICC)
characteristics of lymphomas
derived from mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue
associated with H. pylori
involve B cells in lymph nodes primarily
what is adenocarcinoma
tends to occur proximally in cardia/GO junction region
prevalence increase with age; slightly more common in males
how does adenocarcinoma have a strong link with H. pylori
H. pylori –> chronic gastritis –> metaplasia –> dysplasia –> carcinoma
what is type 1 adenocarcinoma
intestinal (polypod mass) - better prognosis
what is type 2 adenocarcinoma
diffuse (expansive, infiltrative mass)
what are symptoms
dyspepsia and alarm symptoms epigastric pain loss of appetite and weight vomiting (hematemesis in later stages) dysphagia
how is adenocarcinoma diagnosed
upper GI endoscopy
chest X ray
Biopsy
CT scan
how is adenocarcinoma treated
if proximal - total resection
if distal - partial resection
palliative care
combination chemotherapy appears to increase survival in advanced disease
