what is it
A
occur in absence of prior liver disease
fulminant LF is encephalopathy + jaundice for <2 weeks in a previously normal liver

what causes it
A
hepatitis, CMV, EBV, toxoplasmosis
paracetomal
malignancy
rarely wilsons or budd-chiari

what are symptoms
A
jaundice lethargy itch nausea pain encephalopathy + hypoglycaemia if FLF

how is it diagnosed
A
LFTs would be deranged
US defines liver size
virology
liver biopsy, encephalopathy grading

how is it treated
A
IV fluids
increase calorie intake
for itch –> try sodium bicarbonate bath, uresodeoxycholic acid

what are complications
A
complete recovery chronic liver disease encephalopathy (? treated by lactulose) prolonged coagulation death
