1st relatives have 10-15% risk
female 2:1 males
what are symptoms
asymptomatic, non specific diarrhoea steatorrhoea abdominal pain mouth ulcers angular stomatitis weight loss anxiety and depression
how is it diagnosed
blood tests
small bowel biopsy
histology
DEXA bone scan
what looking for in blood test
tTGA IgA and EMA (IgA endomysial antibodies)
what look like in biopsy
villous atrophy, crypt hyperplasia and increased lymphocytes
why is DEXA bone scan used
assess osteoporosis
what is the treatment
mineral and vitamin replacement (compensate for malabsorption)
gluten free diet for life - no wheat barely or rye
