Barrett's Oesophagus Flashcards
1
Q
what is it
A
metaplastic change where stratified squamous epithelium is replaced by columnar epithelium (lower part of oesophagus)
2
Q
how can it be categorised as a pre-malignant condition
A
mucosa becomes unstable and can undergo dysplastic change easily
3
Q
what causes it
A
persistent GORD - occurs in 10%
4
Q
what are symptoms
A
largely as per GORD but can be asymptomatic
5
Q
how is it diagnosed
A
endoscopy shows change in epithelium
biopsy to screen for cancer presence
6
Q
how is it treated
A
increased assessment due to dysplasia
PPI (omeprazole or lansoprazole)
Endoscopic mucosal resection
Radiofrequency ablation
7
Q
what are the complications
A
oesophageal carcinoma (mainly adenocarcinoma)
