Pollination and Fertilisation in Plants Flashcards
What is Pollination?
It is the process of transferring pollen from the anther to the stigma.
What is Self-Pollination?
It is when pollen from one flower is transferred to the stigma of the same flower or same individual plant.
What is Cross-Pollination
It is when pollen from one flower is transferred to the stigma of a different flower of the same species.
What is Wind-Pollination?
It is when some types of plants release pollen into the air so that it is carried by the wind to a stigma of the same species.
What is Insect-Pollination
It is when some types of plants attract insects with petals and nectaries. Pollen is rubbed onto the insects as they try to feed and they deposit it on a stigma of the same species of flower if they visit more than one.
What is Fertilisation in Plants?
It is the process of fusion of the plant sex cells (gametes). The pollen grows a tube through the style to the ovary so that male gametes can travel to fertilise the ovule.
