Multicellular Organisms - Nervous Control Flashcards
1
Q
How are neurons specialised?
A
They allow fast communication between cells in different parts of the body by sending electrical impulses
2
Q
- List the 3 types of neuron
- What is the nervous system composed of?
A
- Sensory
specialised to detect changes in environment (light, sound, etc.) - Inter
- Motor
- composed of CNS and other nerves
3
Q
- What is the CNS composed of?
- Give 2 roles of the CNS
CNS - Central Nervous System
A
All the neurons that make up the brain and spinal cord.
- Processing sensory information (CNS receives electrical impulses from its connected sensory neurons )
- Coordinates the body’s response, by transmitting electrical impulses along motor neurons to glands and muscles.
4
Q
What is a stimulus?
A
- Information an organism is able to detect and respond to.
- Some effectors respond slowly (e.g. glands), some respond quickly (e.g. muscles)
5
Q
List and Describe the 3 main components of the brain
A
- Cerebrum - Controls conscious thoughts, reasoning, memory and emotions
- Cerebellum - Controls balance and coordinated movement
- Medulla - Contains groups of neurons that transmit electrical impulses to the heart and lungs to control breathing rate and heart rate
