Cell Bio - Cell Structure Flashcards
What is the role of the NUCLEUS?
Contains DNA in animal, plant and fungal cells to control cell activities
What is the role of the PLASMID?
Small ring of genetic material found in bacterial cells.
What is the role of the CELL MEMBRANE?
Selectively permeable membrane that controls the entry and exit of substances such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, glucose and waste to and from cells.
What is the role of the CYTOPLASM?
Stores the cell organelles and it is the site of chemical reactions.
What is the role of the CELL WALL?
Outer layer of plant, fungal and bacterial cells and it provides support and protection to cells by giving them a rigid structure that prevents them from bursting.
What is the role of the VACUOLE?
Membrane-bound sac that store a solution of water, salts and sugars (cell sap) and helps support plant and fungal cells.
What is the role of the CHLOROPLAST?
Makes carbohydates in green plant cells, using light energy in the process of photosynthesis.
What is the role of the MITOCHODRIA/ION?
Main site of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production in aerobic respiration in animal, plant and fungal cells.
What is the role of the RIBOSOMES?
Site of protein synthesis in cells.
What is a prokaryotic cell?
Single-cell organism that lacks a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles
What is a eukaryotic cell?
Complex cells that contain a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles.
