Cell Bio - Active Transport Flashcards
Define the term “Active Transport”
Active transport is a process that requires energy (from ATP) to move molecules and ions against the concentration gradient
Define the term “Passive Transport”
Passive transport is a process that does not require energy to move molecules and ions down the concentration gradient
Explain the effect the rate of respiration has on active transport
Because active transport is dependent on ATP, the rate of respiration will affect the rate of active transport e.g. temperature and oxygen avaliability.
Identify what part of the cell membrane carries out active transport
It is carried out by proteins in the cell membrane called protein pumps
Give an example of what a cell might use active transport for
A cell may use active transport to stop a harmful substance that is at a high concentration outside from building up inside the cell.
