Cell Bio - Aerobic Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
What is respiration and what is it used for in mammals?
A
- Cellular process of releasing energy from food through a series of enzyme-controlled reactions
- Mammals need to release heat energy from food to keep their body temperature close to the optimum temperature for their enzymes to work.
2
Q
Name the two types of respiration
A
- Aerobic Respiration (presence of oxygen)
- Fermentation (absence of oxygen)
3
Q
- What is the word equation for AEROBIC RESPIRATION?
- How much ATP is produced from aerobic respiration?
A
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + energy + water
* a lot (38 molecules, 2 from stage 1, 36 from stage 2
4
Q
Explain the process of aerobic respiration
A
S1: Occurs in Cytoplasm
- Glucose is broken down to 2 molecules of pyruvate = releases enough energy to make 2 molecules of ATP. (no oxygen needed)
S2: Occurs in Mitochondria
- A pyruvate molecule enters the mitochondria, makes carbon dioxide and water
- releases enough energy to make lots (36 molecules) of ATP. (oxygen needed)
total ATP made = 38 molecules
