Cell Bio - Aerobic Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
The cellular process of releasing energy from food through a series of enzyme-controlled reactions
What is respiration used for in mammals?
Mammals need to release heat energy from food to keep their body temperature close to the optimum temperature for their enzymes to work.
Name the two types of respiration
- Aerobic Respiration
- Fermentation
What is the word equation for AEROBIC RESPIRATION in plant, animal and fungal cells?
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + energy + water
How much ATP is produced from aerobic respiration?
A lot
Where does stage one and stage two of aerobic respiration occur?
Stage one: cytoplasm
Stage two: mitochondria
Explain the process of aerobic respiration
S1: Cytoplasm
- Glucose is broken down to 2 molecules of pyruvate = releases enough energy to make 2 molecules of ATP. (no oxygen needed)
S2: Mitochondria
- A pyruvate molecule enters the mitochondria, makes carbon dioxide and water
- releases enough energy to make lots of ATP. (oxygen needed)
Aerobic respiration is controlled by…
Enzymes
