What is the role of the MOUTH?
Chews up food and mixes with saliva.
What is the role of the OESOPHAGUS?
Joins the mouth to the stomach and food is squeezed down it.
What is the role of the STOMACH?
Bag with strong muscles that mixes food with acid and begins to break it down.
What is the role of the LIVER?
Produces bile which helps with the digestion of fat.
What is the role of the PANCREAS?
Provides additional enzymes to help digest all sorts of food.
What is the role of the SMALL INTESTINE?
Breaks food down and absorbs nutrients.
What is the role of the LARGE INTESTINE?
Absorbs water from the undigested food.
What is the role of the RECTUM?
Stores faeces (poo) until it is ready to leave the body.
What is the role of the ANUS?
Pushes faeces through and out of the body.
What is PERISTALSIS?
Peristalsis is the movement of food through the digestive tract by wave-like muscle contractions. Strong waves of smooth muscle move balls of swallowed food to the stomach from the oesophagus.
