Cell Bio - Stages of Genetic Engineering Flashcards
1
Q
Define Genetic Engineering
A
It is the transfer of DNA from one organism to another using biotechnology.
2
Q
What is the purpose of Genetic engineering?
A
It is used to genetically modify organisms to give them a mix of genes (genotype) that result in them having desirable physical characteristics. (phenotypes).
3
Q
List the steps of Genetic Engineering
A
- identify section of DNA that contains required gene from source chromosome
- extract required gene using enzymes
- extract plasmid friom bacterial cell
- insert required gene into bacterial plasmid using enzymes
- insert plasmid into host bacterial cell to produce a genetically modified organism (GM).
4
Q
List 5 examples of genetic engineering in the world
A
- less toxic rapeseed oil
- bird resistance to bird flu
- tomatos with longer shelf life
- insulin
- growth hormones
