Cell Bio - Catalysts and Enzymes Flashcards
List 2 ways in which the rate of a chemical reaction can be sped up
The rate can be sped up by:
- increasing the temperature
- adding a catalyst
What is a substrate and what is a product?
A substrate is the chemical(s) that enzymes act upon and a product is the chemical(s) produced by the action of an enzyme
Define the active site of an enzyme
The part of an enzyme that one or more substrate molecules can attach to. It is a complementary shape to the substrate.
Why are enzymes important to animals?
If the cellular reactions in the body happen to slowly, the cell may die. If the cell is part of a multicellular organism, this could harm the individual.
What is the specific substrate and product(s) of Catalase?
- Substrate - Hydrogen Peroxide
- Products - Water + Oxygen
What is the specific substrate and product(s) of Phosphorylase?
- Substrate - Glucose-1-Phosphate
- Products - Starch
What is the specific substrate and product(s) of Amylase?
- Substrate - Starch
- Products - Maltose
What is a enzyme-substrate complex form?
It is a temporary molecule formed when the substrate binds to the enzyme.
