What are stem cells?

A

Unspecialised cells that can divide in order to self-renew
* Have the ability to become different types of specialised cells.
* Involved in growth and repair
* Found in the embryo at early stages

What is a specialised cell?

A

Cells adapted to perform specific functions within an organism.
* Do not have the ability to divide
* Can carry out special roles
* No stem cells present to replace them? → part of a tissue or organ remains damaged
