Digestion- Part 1 Flashcards
What is DIGESTION?
The process of digestion is the breakdown of large food molecules into small soluble ones
Why do the food molecules have to be small?
So that they can pass across the membrane in the small intestine.
What is the DIGESTIVE system’s purpose?
Digestion converts food into cellular fuel. The bloodstream can absorb nutrients this way so they can be transported around the body.
Name the TWO types of digestion.
-Mechanical
-Chemical
What is MECHANICAL digestion?
The process of PHYSICALLY breaking the food into smaller pieces.
What is CHEMICAL digestion?
The process of using chemicals and enzymes to break down large food molecules into smaller ones.
Name TWO places in the digestive system where MECHANICAL digestion occurs.
-Teeth
-Muscle Contractions
Name TWO places in the digestive system where CHEMICAL digestion occurs.
-Saliva
-Stomach
-Small Intestine
Name the 10 PARTS of the digestive system.
-Mouth
-Oesophagus
-Stomach
-Liver
-Gall Bladder
-Pancreas
-Small Intestine
-Large intestine
-Rectum
-Anus
What is AMYLASE?
Amylase is an enzyme, a type of protein that helps your body break down carbohydrates.
What colour is Iodine solution?
Orangey brown
What colour does the IODINE solution change when starch is present?
It changes blue/black. This means it is a POSITIVE result.
What colour does the IODINE solution change when starch is not as present?
It does not change colour. This means it is a NEGATIVE result.
What colour is BENEDICT’S REAGENT?
Bright blue.
What colour does BENEDICT’S change to when sugar is present?
