Nerves, Responses and Behaviour Flashcards
What does the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM do?
The central nervous system coordinates information from the sensory organs to control the behaviour of the organism.
How do the eyes work?
They work by converting light to an electric impulse.
Name the 6 main parts of the EYE
Retina, Lens, Optic nerve, Cornea, Iris, and Pupil.
What is BINOCULAR vision?
Ability to see with two eyes.
How does binocular vision help with judging direction and distance?
With each eye positioned differently relative to an object, each eye gives slightly different spatial information. By comparing the signals from the two eyes, the brain can judge depth, speed, and distance.
How does having two ears make an animal better at detecting the direction a sound is coming from?
With two ears opposite each other, we can listen to sounds from 360 degrees rather than 180 degrees. Binaural sound also provides our brains with more information.
What does the CORNEA do in your eyes?
It bends light to help the eye focus and it also protects your eye from damage.
What does the PUPIL do in your eyes?
The pupil lets light into your eye.
What does the RETINA do in your eyes?
The retina contains millions of light-sensitive cells (rods and cones) and other nerve cells that receive and organize visual information.
Where does the information from the RETINA go?
Your retina sends this information to your brain through your OPTIC NERVE enabling you to see.
What does the LENS do in your eyes?
The lens works together with the cornea to focus light correctly on the retina.
What does the OPTIC NERVE do in your eyes?
The optic nerve is a bunch of nerve fibers that serves as a communication cable between your eyes and your brain.
What does CNS stand for?
Central Nervous System.
What is the CORNEA made out of?
Muscle.
List the TWO organs in the CNS?
- Brain
- Spinal Cord
