Philosophically, what are the three gunas?
They are the three components that make up Prakriti (nature/matter).
What is our relationship to the three gunas when we enter Samadhi?
We transcend the three gunas.
Prakriti is primordial physical energy containing the three gunas found in all nature. What are the three gunas?
Sattva, Raja and Tamas
What is Raja?
The principle of movement, energy, activity, emotion and turbulence. Fiery, passionate and red.
What is Tamas?
The principle of inertia, darkness, dullness and resistance. Dark, depressive and black.
What is Sattva?
The principle of light, perception, intelligence and harmony. Pure and white.
What defines the three gunas?
The Bhagavad Gita.
What is a sattvic diet?
consists of pure foods that are light in nature and mildly cooling so as to not disturb the mind.
Conducive to yoga practice
What is a rajasic diet
foods that cause hyperactivity, restlessness, and insomnia.
Increase toxins, cause inflammation and promote hypertension
excessively spicy, salty, sour e.g. chili, garlic, onion, wine.
Overheated food, fried and roasted food
what is a tamasic diet
foods that cause hyperactivity, apathy, excess sleep and accumulation of phlegm and waste material
stale, cold, recooked, artificial, greasy or heavy food
‘dead’ food like meat and fish
excessive intake of fats, oils, white sugar, flour and pastries
