What makes up the spinal column?
the vertebrae and the intervertebral discs that provide cushioning between each vertebra
What is the spinal column
it is the central axis and is made up of lots of joints to provide movement
Is the human spine straight?
No, it has natural curve that resembles an āSā
What are the three natural curves in the spine?
- cervical curve (neck)
- Thoracic curve (trunk)
- lumbar curve (lower back)
how many bones make up the spine?
26
what is the alternative name for the neck and how many vertebrae does it have?
cervical
7 vertebrae
what is the alternative name for the mid and upper back
and how many vertebrae does it have?
thoracic
12 vertebrae
what is the alternative name for the lower back
and how many vertebrae does it have?
lumbar
5 vertebrae
what is the alternative name for the pelvic part and how many bones are there?
the sacral
the sacrum, and the coccyx (tailbone)
what planes of movement can the spine perform?
- flexion and extension
- lateral flexion (side bending)
- rotation
what is an example of a spinal flexion?
forward bends
what is an example of a spinal extension?
back bends and chest openers
what is an example of a lateral flexion?
hip openers, triangle pose
what is an example of a rotation of the spine?
a lot of yoga poses include a twist of the upper or thoracic spine
