Anatomy - muscles of respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
breathing - it is an automatic activity that is performed by the muscles and negative pressure
What are the main muscles responsible for breathing?
the diaphragm and the intercostals
What does the diaphragm do when you breath?
the diaphragm contracts, moving downward allowing the chest to expand and draw in more air (and massages abdominal organs)
What is the diaphragm controlled by?
the autonomous nervous system
What do the intercostals do when breathing
these muscles attach to the ribs, and they support the diaphragm in respiration
what happens during inhalation?
diaphragm - contracts
external intercostals - contract (elevate ribs)
= thoracic cavity expands
what happens during expiration
diaphragm - relaxes
external intercostals - relax
internal intercostals - contract = forceful expiration
= thoracic cavity reduces
