Philosophy - Tantra / Hatha / Kundalini Flashcards
How did tantra emerge?
as a response to unrealistic austerities in yoga practice. It was a reembracing of all aspects of life.
Tantra relies upon the belief that
if all life manifests from an underlying source, all of life is inherently spiritual. This includes the dark sides and integrating and transforming them
Hatha is a later development of…
tantra
Aside from balancing and unifying opposites to merge with a unified consciousness, the deeper significance of hatha is…
to generate fire (agni) by the balance and union of two vitals pranas flowing in two fundamental channels (ida and pingala)
What is the basis of kundalini?
the belief that shiva is masculine, shakti is feminine, and in human beings the feminine aspect is called ‘kundalini shakti’ rests at the base of the spinal cord, sleeping and coiled like a serpent, and this must be awakened / pass through the chakras to become awakened
What is kundalini yoga?
it is to culminate the meditative experience of hatha yoga, to then allow the kundalini energy to pass through the chakras to the crown of the head to unite with shiva. this results in the union of self with the universe
