Anatomy - muscular system - types of muscle contraction Flashcards
does a muscle have to relax to lengthen?
no, a muscle can produce force at any length
the two main divisions of muscle contractions relate to what?
whether the muscle length changes or not
What are the two type of muscle contractions?
isotonic and isometric contractions
what are the two types of isotonic contractions?
concentric/positive and eccentic/negative
what is an isotonic contraction?
these cause the muscle to change length as it contracts and causes movement of a body part
e.g. bending an elbow to pull a weight up or performing squats
what is a positive isotonic contraction?
the muscle shortens as it contracts (e.g. when you are bicep curling and raising the weight)
what is a negative isotonic contraction?
the muscle lengthens as it contracts (e.g. when you are bicep curling and lowering the weight)
what is an isometric contraction?
when there is tension but there is no change to the length of the contracting muscle
these are often to promote stability and endurance
e.g. a plank pose
