OCTA 227 LAB Final Flashcards
What are three symptoms of a Right CVA?
- Paralysis/weakness of left side of body
- Poor balance
- Poor coordination
What are 3 symptoms of a Left CVA?
- Paralysis/weakness of the right side of the body
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to touch
An example of fine chopped food is
Scrambled eggs
An example of mechanical soft food is
Ham
An example of regular food is
Chicken
An example of thin food is
Water
An example of nectar thick food is
Juice with thickening packet
Community accessibility issues:
- Ramps
* Double lines for parking
What are 2 energy conservation techniques?
- Pursed lip breathing
* Diaphragmatic Breathing
A breathing technique that helps strengthen your diaphragm
Diaphragmatic Breathing
A breathing techno that prevents air from being trapped in your lungs, helps regulate your breathing pattern, and reduces anxiety from feeling short of breath
Pursed Lip Breathing
A scale that measures spasticity (tone)
Modified Ashworth Scale
Hand placement for measuring tone in the shoulder?
shoulder/elbow
Hand placement for measuring tone in the elbow?
above the elbow/wrist
Hand placement for measuring tone in the wrist?
forearm/hand
Hand placement for shoulder PROM?
_____/elbow
Hand placement for elbow PROM?
above the elbow/wrist
Hand placement for wrist PROM?
forearm/hand
Upper Extremity Donning flaccid or spastic:
- position shirt on lap
- position sleeve opening for affected hand
- put affected arm in first
- use unaffected arm to pull the shirt over back
- put unaffected arm in last
Lower Extremity Dressing flaccid or spastic:
1.
Lower Extremity Dressing flaccid or spastic:
- position pants on the floor
- put affected leg in then affected leg in
- use reacher/dressing stick to pull pants up to thighs
- grab pants weight shifting side to side to pull pants over buttocks
When donning affected extremities
affected leg/arm first and followed by the unaffected arm/leg
When doffing affected extremities
unaffected leg/arm first followed by the affected arm/leg
a medical scale used that assess individuals after a closed head injury (TBI) based on cognitive and behavioral presentations as they emerge from coma
Ranchos Los Amigos Scale
Level 1 :
- No response to external stimuli (senses)
* Coma
Level 2:
- Generalized response
* Pt reacts to external stimuli in nonspecific, inconsistent, and nonpurposeful manner
Level 3:
- Localized response (responds directly to the stimulus)
- Total assist
- Pt responds specifically and inconsistently with delays to stimuli, but may follow simple commands for motor action
Level 4:
- Max assist
- Agitated and Confused
- Pt exhibits bizarre, non-purposeful, incoherent or inappropriate behaviors, has no short term recall, attention is short and non-selective
- Doesn’t cooperate
- Moody/ Aggressive
Level 5:
- Max Assist
- Confused, Non-agitated, Inappropriate
- Inappropriate use of objects (toothbrush)
- Pt gives random, fragmented, and non-purposeful responses to complex or unstructured stimuli- simple commands are followed inconsistently, memory and selective attention are impaired, and new info not retained
- Perform tasks with structure and max cues
Level 6:
- Mod assist
- Confused and Appropriate
- Pt gives context appropriate, goal-directed responses, dependent upon external input for direction. There is carry-over for relearned, but not for new tasks, and resent memory problem persists
Level 7:
- Min assist
- Automatic and appropriate
- Judgement impaired
- Pt behaves appropriately in familiar settings, performs daily routines automatically, and shows carry-over for new learning at lower than normal rates. Pt initiates social interactions
Level 8:
- Standby assistance
- Purposeful and appropriate
- Pt oriented and responds to the environment but abstract reasoning abilities are decreased relative to premormid levels
Level 1 activity:
ROM, positioning, coma stem (stimulate the senses)
Level 2 activity:
ROM, positioning, coma stem (therapist may lift arm and the pt may move legs)
Level 3 activity:
Ask the pt can he/she grasp toothbrush or brush (pt give delayed nods and blinks eyes spontaneously) try to grasp object
Level 4 activity:
Ask pt to brush hair or brush teeth, Pt screams I DON’T WANT TO BRUSH MY TEETH and throw the object
Level 5 activity:
ask pt do she know what the object is (say no) tell pt that the object is a toothbrush/brush, ask pt to demonstrate what do you do with a toothbrush (pt brush hair)
Level 6 activity:
Pt doesn’t know the time or day of week Have pt identify object in therapist hand (toothbrush/brush), have pt brush teeth or brush hair
Level 7 activity:
Ask pt to brush teeth and he/she put too little or too much paste (pt asks did she put enough) or have pt brush hair but the pt continuously brushes it w/o stopping
Level 8 activity:
Have pt set an alarm in his/her phone for a reminder of when to brush teeth or comb hair, or write things to do on a dry erase board
How do you perform diaphragmatic breathing?
- Seated or laying
- put one hand on your stomach and one on your chest
- breathe in through your nose expanding your stomach
- As you breathe out through pursed lips flatten your stomach (12 deep breaths)
How do you perform purse lip breathing?
- Relax neck and shoulders
- Breathe in through your nose while counting to 3
- Breathe out slowly though pursed lips counting to 6
- repeat for a min or 2 or until you feel comfortable
Energy conservation and work simplification:
- Pace yourself
- Sit whenever possible
- Eliminate unnecessary tasks
- Change positioning
- Use assistive devices
