Nitroglycerin (Nitrostat, Nitrobid, NTG)
Class:
Nitrate, Vasodilator.

Mechanism of Action:
Broken down to work with different chemicals to produce nitric oxide, a naturally occurring substance in the body. It is a powerful vasodilator.

Indications:
Chest pain associated with acute coronary syndrome and CHF.

Contraindications:
Hypotension, use of erectile dysfunction medications.

Precautions:
Deteriorates rapidly when exposed to light and air. Systolic Blood Pressure must be above 90 mmHg (100 in NH) for administration.

Side Effects:
Instant headache, weakness, dizziness, hypotension, tachycardia, N/V.

Interactions:
Effects of Nitro will be decreased with patients who have used alcohol, beta blockers and erectile dysfunction meds.

Dosage:
0.4 mg every 5 minutes while chest pain persist and systolic BP remains over 100.
(Systolic BP 140+ for congestive heart failure)

Routes:
Sublingual for spray and tablets.

Notes:
Always clean spray after using it.
