Mechanism of Action:
Increases glucose concentration in blood, reverses acute hypoglycemia.

Indications:
Hypoglycemia in adults with altered mental status.

Contraindications:
Hyperglycemia and intracranial hemorrhage.

Precautions:
Check BGL before and after. D50 doesn’t last long - encourage patient to eat.

Side Effects:
Localized irritation can still occur with a patent line.

Interactions:
None significant.

Dosage:
25g slow IV push. Repeated 10-15 minutes if BGL is still below 70mg/dl.

Fact:
Contraindication for hemorrhagic shock is questionable.

NH Notes:
Preferring 25g of “D10” over “D50” is recommended for pediatrics wit hypoglycemia. Target BGL is 60mg/dl.
