Nervous System Flashcards
What is the purpose of the CNS?
It controls all basic bodily functions and responds to external changes
What is the function of the peripheral nervous system?
Provides a complete network of motor and sensory nerve fibres connecting the CNS to rest of body
What is the function of the autonomic nervous system?
Parallels spinal cord but is separately involved in control of exocrine glands, blood vessels, viscera, external genitalia
How many pairs of cranial nerves are there?
12 pairs
How many pairs of vagus nerves are there?
There are 2 nerves. They are the longest nerve of the autonomic nervous system
What is the purpose of motor nerves?
Carries info to muscles to cause them to contract
What is the function of sensory nerves?
Carries sensory info to CNS for interpretation by the brain
What are the main parts of the brain?
- medulla (brain stem)
- cerebrum
- cerebellum
What does CSF stand for?
Cerebrospinal fluid
What is CSF
A clear colourless body fluid found in the brain and spinal cord
What is the function of CSF?
- produced in choroid plexus in ventricles of the brain
- acts as a cushion or buffer for brain
- provides basic mechanical and immunological protection to the brain
