What is the classification for glucagon?
Hypoglycaemia: glycogenolytic hormones
What is the presentation of glucagon?
1mg via powder and solution for reconstitution (1ml)
How is glucagon administered?
Intramuscular (IM)
What are the indications for glucagon?
- hypoglycaemia in patients unable to take oral glucose or unable to gain IV access (with blood glucose level < 4mmol/L)
What are the contra indications for glucagon?
KSAR
< 1 month
Phaechromocytoma
What is the usual dosage of glucagon in an adult?
1mg IM
What is the usual dosage for glucagon in a paediatric?
> 1 month and < 25kg: 500mcg IM
1 month and > 25kg: 1mg IM
What are the side effects of glucagon?
- nausea
Rare- hypotension/dizziness/headache
When might glucagon be ineffective?
- in patients with low stored glycogen (prior use in 24hr/alcohol dependent patients with liver disease)
-must be refrigerated
Who can glucagon not be administered to?
Hypoglycaemic patients who are not diagnosed as diabetic
