What is the classification of ibuprofen?
Analgesics: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDS)
What is the presentation of ibuprofen?
Suspension 100mg in 5ml/ 200mg in 5ml
200/400mg tablets
How is ibuprofen administered?
Orally (PO)
What is the indication for ibuprofen?
mild to moderate pain
What are the contra-indications for ibuprofen?
- not suitable for children under 3mths (or BW less tha 5kg)
- patients with a history of asthma exacerbated by aspirin
- pregnancy
- peptic ulcer disease
- known renal/liver/heart failure
- KSAR
What is the dosage of ibuprofen for adult patients with mild pain?
400mg PO
What is the dosage of ibuprofen for an adult patient with moderate pain?
600mg PO
What is the paediatric dosage of ibuprofen?
10mg/kg up to 400mg
What are the side effects of ibuprofen?
Skin rashes
gastrointestinal intolerance
bleeding
What do you do if ibuprofen was given to the patient in the previous 6 hours?
adjust the dose downwards by the amount previously given so that a maximum of 10mg/kg or 400mg for paediatrics
