nervous system Flashcards
What is the nervous system
helps info get carried from one part of the body to another
in the form of electric/nervous impulses via ‘nerves’
coordination of these by the nervous system
What’s the nervous system made of
Central nervous system
comprised of the brain and spinal chord - it processes info from all parts of the body and coordinates this into action
peripheral nervous system
all the vast network of nerves outside (from and leading into) the brain / spinal chord
The brain
Has central control of the nervous system
receives nervous impluses from all over the body, and from the brain back again = response to surrounding environment
coordinates these signals into voluntary and involuntary activity
all organs, muscles, sense are connected to the brain
what’s the brain involved in..
- autonomic (non voluntary) control of process - lungs, heart , temperature, release of hormones
- coordinateion and response to sensory info from eyes, nose, etc
- voluntary control of muscle activity
- Information processing and decision making
The peripheral nervous system
Autonomic nervous system:
Unconscious
controls organs and body function involuntarily (heart, sweating, etc)
Sensory somatic system - Conscious
Voluntary control using muscle and sensing external stimuli - picking up a cup, flying, walking.
Training and experience is needed
Entric system
Controls activities and functions of the gut
What the authomic nervous system broken into
Sympathetic division:
Responsible for preparing the body for action - le releasing adrenaline
parasympathetic division:
returning the body back to normal - releasing noradernaline
What is proprioceptor
receptors located in the muscle
detect and relay info about the length of extension for each muscle
resposible for semi-automatic movement of limbs and voluntary movments in general
ex: hands and feet
ex: locate and control a switch in the cockpit,
what is mechanoreceptors
receptors located in the tendons
detect and relay info about the pressure / tension in a muscle.
ex: make fine adjustment to the back pressure on the control column when making a turn
How are Proprioceptors and Mechanoreceptors used together?
helps the brain calculate the position and orientation of all moveable parts of the body and the amount of force exerted by limbs and digits
what is reflex
when the body automates a response due to an external stimuli
you automatically withdraw when there is pain
how does it work
there is no Centreal Nervous system involved
instead, the sensory nerve is connected to motor nerve in the spinal chord.
the stimulus is relayed from sensory nerve to excite action in the motor nerve
