Behaviour Flashcards
What is behaviour affected by
Internal factors:
Personality and attitude
External factors:
Group dynamics & interactions
Define group dynamics
it’s the effect of multiple personalities on each other
define personality
it’s a set of stable characteristcs/traits and behaviours a person usually exhibits
usually inate and are unique to the person. They are assembed by internal factors
personality is defined by up to 5 traits (identified by CRM)
Neoroticism
Agreeableness
Extroversion
Open to experiences
Consciountiousness
What is Attitude
A general and more or less stable predisposition to behave a certain way.
The general, enduring positive or negative feelings towards a person, object or issue
Not specific to an individual
Assembled from external factors
What is the 4 scales in a personality model
Stable
Unstable
Introvert
Extrovert
Which personality is ideal for flying
CASS
Self control
Agreeable
Consciencous
Stable slightly extroverted
What is attitude a mix of?
belief (knowledge gained from the world) and value
when you add value to a belief you form an attitude.
Example:
You have knowledge smoking is bad->believe smoking is bad->Causes bad health
Therefore, my attitude is that smoking is a bad thing
it represents a degree of someone’s likes and dislikes (predisposition to how we responds to things in the world)
Attitude is acquired from experience and learnings
They can apply to a persona’s behaviour or aspects of their behaviour
attitude can changes over time
ratio of beliefs, to values to attitudes
People have thousands of beliefs, but just dozens of values => hundreds of attitudes
why are attitudes important
helps copy and provde a ready made response to a situation.
helps us with decision making and making sense of relationships
link between behaviour and attitude
Not a very strong link..
Attitude doesn’t necessarily alter behaviour
(you have negative attitude about smoking but continue to smoke)
prolonged or repetitive behaviour can alter attitude
behaviour stemming from attitude can be modified or controlled. (self control)
What are 6 hazardous attitudes that lead to hazardous behavious:
anti-authoritanism
Aversion to rules & superiors=>disregarding rules
Likes to fly in their on way, misses their medical or their licenses are not in order
Implusiveness
Quick to act, no self control=>make irrational or quick decisions without thinking/jump to conclusions, doesn’t take time to assess the situation
Sense of invulnerability:
believes ‘it won’t happen to me’ =>underestimating riks
Excessive self esteem/machismo
Believing he’s better than others=>rule breaking, ignoring peers
Showing off their skills and abilities by taking uncessary risks
Resignation
believing he has no influence => easily giving up, submitting to fate and will not form a decision to act. Not in command anymore, ‘too late attitude’
**Complacency - **
excessive confidence and sense of contentment that leads to reduced risk awareness => hypovigilance and reduced self control
why is it important to understand & attitudes
to optimise cooperation in the cockpit
**guard against inherent negative predisposition **we may have to behave a certain way towards events which may impact the safety of flight
What’s the name of the personality model

How is good judgement formed
Good judgement is taught and also developed along with skills, experience and training
Good judgement = safe decisions are taken and reasonable actions ensue
You must appreciate risk, to reduce risk and increase safety
