Barotrauma Flashcards
Barotrauma
(concerned with boyle’s law- volumen/pressure relationship of gas)
injury caused by pressure
when ambient pressure is lower than pressure in body pockets/cavities, the body triest to exhaust the pressure to the atmosphere
if it can’t, it can create pain, tissue damage, bleeding..
Gastro-intestinal
trapped gasses in the stomach/intestine
causes pressure pain and farts
otic barotrauma
when the air in the middle ear is at lower pressure than the cabin - this closes /blocks the eustachian tube
blocked eustachian tube could rupture ear drim
need to pop ear, swallow, do valsalva manoever (esp on descent)
caues pressure pain and reduction in hearing
sinus barotrauma
sinuses can be bocked by infection and mucus so can cause pain, headache, bleeding
no protection except to not fly if you have a cold, soar throat, etc..
danger of sinus barotrauma
it’s dangerous to climb if you have it.
stop the climb and descend and land.
if you feel it in descend instead…then climb up a bit, then descend slowly and return to previous altitude.
maxillary sinuses will hurt on descend and eyes may water
Aerodontalgia
air trapped in cavities of the teeth
you cannot suffer from it during descend because ambient pressure increases and equalizes with the pressure inside the teeth.
sympotoms happen on ascends
eustachia tube equalises pressure between
middle east and outer ear (outside environment)
what happens to eustachian tube when flying with a cold/flu -** Pressure Vertigo**
especially if one eustachian tube is block and the other isn’t, it can create pressure vertigo and affect the vesitublar canals. Basically there is a lack of pressure balance between the 2 ears
cause diziness and affect balance
